Oestrogen replacement therapy relieves menopausal vasomotor symptoms, such as hot flushes and night sweats, caused by fluctuations in oestrogen levels, and those of oestrogen lack — for example, vaginal dryness, painful intercourse and urinary frequency due to reduced muscle tone of the bladder and irritation of the lining of the bladder and urethra. The alleviation of these physical symptoms may well improve mental well-being, helping the user to avoid the anxiety and depression some women experience during the menopause and to maintain libido.

There is evidence that HRT slows, or prevents, menopausal and post-menopausal bone loss; the reduction in the rate of bone fracture in the elderly is not yet fully known, nor is it known how long the effect lasts.

Oestrogen in HRT probably protects against post-menopausal heart disease, as long as the type and strength of the progestogen used does not negate the oestrogen benefits.

There is evidence that oestrogen replacement therapy may extend post-menopausal life expectancy and the quality of life in those years.
